Living the Miller High Life!

It was 1975, and the International Canvention race was tight.

The final lineup? Buster Friedman with his beer can lawn sculpture; Gary Vernon with his beer can replica of the Empire State Building...and Dan Carlson, a maverick beer can collector with a penchant for global awareness and a vision as wide as Hoover Dam.

The judges fought long and hard about who would take home that year's trophy and be immortalised in Richard Dolphin's upcoming book, "Collecting Beer Cans," but by 3 AM Saturday, they knew who deserved the laurels of fame the most. First prize went to that ragtag kid from Iowa, Dan.
