No one had the heart to tell little Polly Kent that "Mittens" was not actually a living cat. They thought it was so adorable that she had a sweet imaginary pet that she took with her everywhere she went; and talked to, and petted like a real animal. It was the stuff of amused chatter at the neighbourhood Tupperware® parties.

The "joke" went on for several months, until one sunny afternoon Polly proudly sauntered in the parlour and proudly told them all that "Mittens" had killed a rabid, mange-infested rat...and produced the evidence on the spot.
